We all know that creatine helps us get stronger in the gym by feeding our muscles energy during our workouts. In recent years we have started seeing many other types of creatine to begin to enter the market with claims of being better than just plain old creatine.
Creatine Monohydrate is the most popular type of creatine but what about another type of creatine such as Creatine Ethyl Ester?
Manufacturers have been marketing Creatine Ethyl Ester is a better type of creatine – providing higher creatine level in muscles, lower water retention and even getting creatine non-responders to finally see some gains.
Lofty claims for a type of creatine so let’s take a dive into creatine ethyl ester – what is it, does it live up to its claims and is it actually better?
What is Creatine Ethyl Ester?
Creatine Ethyl Ester is creatine monohydrate that has been enhanced with an ester through a process called esterification. I’ll keep the explanation simple because it can get quite complicated but in plain terms attaching an ester to creatine is there to help it become absorbed into your body more easily.
One of the problems with creatine monohydrate is that your body has a difficult time absorbing it. Pharmaceutical companies use esterification to help some drugs become better absorbed into the body to be more effective.
This is the same idea for creatine ethyl ester – by attaching the ester to it your body will be able to absorb it easier, making it more effective.
How is it Different from Other Types of Creatine?
You’ll find that creatine ethyl ester is slightly different from other creatine simply because it has been enhanced with the ester. While some manufacturers claim this form of creatine superior to others, there is little evidence to support this. It has been shown to alleviate muscle pain from overexertion, or when an athlete is attempting to push themselves beyond their boundaries.
Because creatine ethyl ester holds the potency of natural pain blockers you will be able to push your limits more easily, without the apprehension that comes with worry of pain. Further, creatine ethyl ester potentially provides a higher level of recovery.
Is it Better than Other Types of Creatine?
Opinions greatly differ on whether or not creatine ethyl ester is any better than other forms of Creatine. Studies have shown creatine to be effective but little is know if creatine ethyl ester provides the gains or benefits that it claims.
Some users have reported more effective gains from using creatine ethyl ester compared to regular creatine monohydrate while others have reported no additional benefits. At a minimum you will see the same gains as using creatine monohydrate while some users may see additional gains from using creatine ethyl ester.
We would recommend trying out creatine ethyl ester to see if you experience any additional gains from it. If you do great – if not you can go back to regular creatine monohydrate.
